About the event

When we are trying to get better as artists, it can be really important to study how other professional artists work. This enables us to expand our technique and way of thinking with the knowing that if they did it, then it must be good.

The intention isn't to copy them, or try and be someone we are not, but to step into the mind of an expert, take the bits WE like, and filter them into our own practice.

The first 15 minutes of this session, we will dive into the dark childhood of Francis Bacon, which will help us to understand the nature of his art. We will then look at pictures of his studio so we can see the way he worked and gain a better understanding of how he created a painting. Then, I will take key pieces of his work and compare them directly with the influence to better our understanding of how exactly he interpreted what inspired him.

Once the theory side is done, we will delve into our own lives and find ways of bringing this into our drawings, from the way in which we make marks, the materials we decide to use and the compositions we create. We will work from photographs (since this is what Francis Bacon did) as well as our own imaginations.

By the end of this session, you will have several exciting portrait and surreal drawings. You will feel you have expanded your technique and learnt how to bring your life into your work.

Highly recommened for artists of all abilities. This is an open space for creative expansion.
